Tips To Clean & Dry Your Jewellery

All that glitters may not be gold, but jewellery without its characteristic sheen can be a little unpleasant on the eyes. Just a few remedies can keep your jewellery from getting rusty and dull.

The Wash and Dry method
Jewellery needs periodic cleaning to maintain its sparkle. And no, you don’t have to trudge all the way to the jewellery store to restore the shine on your pieces. Here’s how to keep your diamond shining!
l Mild soap, diluted with filtered water is the best way to remove layers of dirt, dust and sweat from most pieces but don’t use this technique on vintage ornaments. Remember to use filtered water because untreated water may contain chemicals and salts that could damage jewellery.
l Use soft brushes to remove dirt from those intricate designs.
l In the end, use a cotton cloth to dry and buff them.
And there! Your sparkling, clean jewellery is now ready to be flaunted!

How to store your jewellery?
Remember the bad apple story? It applies to jewellery as well. Avoid storing all your jewellery together. Do not mix diamonds, gold, imitations or precious stones in one box. Even if one item is affected, it would spoil the other ones.
l Silver needs to be stored separately in a cool and dry place so that it doesn't tarnish. Gold and diamonds should be stored in padded jewellery boxes to keep it safe and unscathed.
l Zip lock bags are very useful in storing imitation jewellery as it helps protect them from dust and keeps their exclusivity intact for a longer time.

Strict No-No's while pampering your jewellery
l Your swimming ensemble should never include gold and diamonds. No, it isn’t a fashion disaster but the chlorine water can damage your pieces.
l Perfume, hairspray and other cosmetics are potentially dangerous for your jewellery. When you are getting ready, save the bling for last.
l Also, avoid wearing expensive jewellery while doing household chores or physical activities. You never know when it might get scratched while working. Remember, Desperate Housewives is only a TV show!
l Never leave your jewellery on the wash basin or a bathroom cabinet, because humidity can cause tarnishing. And you don’t want your precious pieces to accidentally fall into the drain, do you?
